Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speechwriter. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and comments on portrayals of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that examines female representations in popular culture narratives. She's committed to removing stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. Additionally she has a mission to increase awareness about online harassment targeted at women, and other those who are marginalized. Sarkeesian has a Master's degree in the field of political and social thought from York University. As a public speaker, she is highly sought after and has spoken at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. When she was a student at the university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender equality and the rights of women at an early stage. A woman with ambitions to create a web series that examined the gender representation of video games, she was targeted by an internet-based campaign. It was not enough to halt her. Instead, it increased her importance to be a feminist as well as media critique. As a result of the many accomplishments she's made to feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards.
